Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
God dwells with the poor in spirit (Isaiah 57:15) and the poor in spirit dwell with God. The poor in spirit will be his temple and soon God will be their temple (Rev 21:22). Man says that blessed are the rich. God says blessed are the poor. If the spirit of man reckons the things of man of no value, then can the Spirit of God show man the things of the spirit most valuable (Rom 8:5, 1 Cor 2:11). To be poor in spirit is to be rich in the Holy Spirit. Jesus said to seek first the kingdom of God. Thus, we must seek to be poor in spirit; we must seek to be rich in the Holy Spirit. We must cast away the things of man and mind the things of the Spirit. For our possession is of a heavenly nature; a spiritual possession. Jesus said this kingdom is not of this world; it’s of heaven. We may be subjects in this earthly kingdom; toiling, paying, suffering. One day, we will reign with him in our heavenly kingdom (2 Tim 2:12; Rom 8:17).
Blessed indeed! The last will be first! The least will be the greatest! To lack and want now is to possess and be satisfied in eternity! Jesus said, “If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.” (Mat 19:21,22) What great possession does your spirit have? Go and sell it. Rid yourself of the riches of the spirit of man. They will leave you destitute of the things of God and heaven. Humble yourselves before the mighty hand of God, and you will be exalted; lifted to the most heavenly places of God’s dominion (James 4:10, Rev 21:10). The blessings of God’s children are not earthly, but heavenly.
